GreatNonprofits Unveils 2013 Top-Rated List of Nonprofits in Washington D.C.

How to Choose A Charity This Season Of Giving

Redwood Shores, Calif. – In 2013, $375 billion is expected to be donated to charities.   To help donors and volunteers find worthy charities to support this season of giving, GreatNonprofits has just released the 2013 Top-Rated Nonprofits list for Washington, D.C.

The Top-Rated Nonprofit Awards is the charity world’s equivalent of the “People’s Choice Awards.”   Over 40,000 reviews were submitted nation-wide by volunteers, program participants, and donors for the awards. Thirty-seven nonprofits won spots on the Top-Rated list in Washington, D.C. Nonprofits included organizations like L’Arche, committed to building community for adults with intellectual disabilities and Lucky Dog, dedicated to rescuing pets from high-kill shelters. Organizations based in Washington, D.C. help not only the city but serve in regions across the U.S. and around the world. These organizations include Urban Alliance, Girls Gotta Run, Amazon Conservation Association, and the National Council on Aging. For a full list, click here.

The reviews came in the form of inspiring stories, like this one about Hyacinth’s Place, whose mission is to break the cycle of homelessness in women with a mental health diagnosis:

“I have seen both the consistent & persistent dedication of Executive Director Urla Barrow & the staff & volunteers, and also the joy of the residents. I intend to continue to give both my time and financial support to Hyacinth’s Place as this is a work of Love, Courage and Faith that needs to continue to give Hope & Sustenance to the women that it serves.

We’re in the giving season – when donors and volunteers are looking to support nonprofits,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits. “This 2013 Top-Rated Nonprofit list helps people easily find terrific charities, national or local, who are making a difference.”

Craig Newmark, a philanthropist and founder of craigslist.org said, “GreatNonprofits is a great service for people interested in inspiring others to donate and volunteer at their favorite nonprofits. Folks can rate charities and share their first-hand experience with the organization. Now people can help each other discover nonprofits doing good work in their town.”
